looking over the edge
i met a few different people when i was hiking on the inca trail and, upon saying i was heading onto bolivia next, one guy said that i had to do 'death road' while i was there. he'd been travelling for a few weeks, and said it had been the highlight of his holiday so far. he explained it was a mountain bike trail that follows a road down a bolivian mountain, descending over 3000 metres in the process. it's also known as 'the world's most dangerous road', mainly due to the number of accidents and fatalities attributed to it. there are severe dropoffs on the wrong side of the path - which narrows down to a single car width in some sections. it all sounded pretty risky, and not necessarily that much fun. however i then found out that you got a free tshirt if you completed it - so i was sold. when i got home i washed my tshirt along with a red cusquena tshirt i'd bought from a local market - and they both ended up running into each other. so now i have a 'world's most dangerous road' tshirt complete with apparent blood stains. bonus. this is a picture of the founder of gravity - the original tour company who had the crazy idea of leading bikers on this treacherous journey.
